GCal Backup - Coming Soon
Backup your Google Calendar
“What is GCalBackup?”
Well, it’s a service, currently in development, that will allow you to backup you Google Calendars regularly, automatically and painlessly.
“Hang on a second. Doesn’t Google Calendar already allow you to back it up? Why do I need another service?”
You can indeed backup, or export, your Google Calendars manually. Google have even gone to the trouble of giving you detailed instructions on how to do it. The problem is that you have to follow the instructions, and remember to do it on a regular basis, and then remember to store your backups in some kind of meaningful way. Who has time for all that?
What you need is an automated way to backup – set it up once, and then forget about it. Sleep soundly knowing that your calendars are being backed up, ready for that fateful day when you might need them.
“Hmmm, I’m still not convinced. I sync my Google Calendar with my iPhone/Blackberry/Android phone. Surely I don’t need GCalBackup.”
Not exactly. Syncing is great, but it’s no replacement for backup. One of the things that often happens with syncing, is that you can end up with duplicate calendar entries, if the syncing software gets confused. It’s then a huge, time-consuming, soul-destroying job to manually delete the duplicates, and try the sync again. And who wants their soul to be destroyed?
This is where GCalBackup comes in. With your backup, you could just restore the backup, correct the problem with the sync, and you’re good to go again.
And don’t call me Shirley.
“OK, you got me – I’m sold. What do I do next?”
For the moment, just sign-up to be notified when GCalBackup is ready to rock and roll. And tell all your friends, and get them to sign up too. And all your co-workers. And mention GCalBackup at your next residents’ association meeting, PTA, sports event… you get the idea.
As soon as we’re good to go, we’ll let you know.
